Dr. MacDonald carefully customizes all body contouring procedures for the most favorable result for each patient. However, here are some general steps you can expect.
Before Your Procedure
Body contouring requires general anesthesia. You must complete a pre-operative questionnaire to ensure you are healthy. We’ll provide instructions regarding arrival time and a reminder not to eat or drink anything after midnight.
Check-In and Anesthesia
Our team will greet you at the check-in area. Dr. MacDonald will ensure you are comfortable, answer any last questions, and evaluate the treatment areas. After you are resting under anesthesia, Dr. MacDonald will begin your body contouring procedure.
Body Contouring Procedure
According to your surgical plan, Dr. MacDonald will begin removing skin and tissue. She may also perform liposuction. The length of surgery and recovery time will depend upon how many areas you choose to have treated.
Procedures you might decide to include in your body contouring after weight loss are:
Body Contouring Aftercare
Body contouring is an outpatient procedure, so you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first few days. You will need to fill provided prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics.
Following surgery, you will have two small drains, and our nurse will show you how to care for them. Dr. MacDonald will see you in three to five days to remove the drains. Do not shower until after you have your drains removed. All the stitches will dissolve on their own, and you can care for incisions with ointment and gauze. You will need to wear an abdominal wrap or other compression dressings full-time for approximately four to six weeks.
For those with physical jobs or small children, plan to have four to six weeks of recovery time. If your job is relatively sedentary, you might return to work in 2-4 weeks. Avoid activities that increase your blood pressure until six weeks after surgery. However, Dr. MacDonald encourages you to begin light walks as soon as possible.
As with any surgical procedure, following Dr. MacDonald’s instructions regarding limiting physical activity, cleansing, and avoiding sun exposure is fundamental to ensuring optimal results from body contouring surgery in Vancouver.
