Eyelid Surgery Vancouver - Dr. Jeannie MacDonald

As we get older, the skin around our eyes loses some of its supportive scaffolding and begins to droop as a result. In addition, the muscles around the eye lose their tightness, allowing fatty tissue to bulge. Drooping eyelids can result in a tired, angry, or sad appearance. However, eyelid surgery can give you a younger, more refreshed appearance. You can return home to recover after this straightforward, in-office procedure.

You deserve a provider with unparalleled skills and an artistic eye who takes the time to understand your needs and aesthetic aims. With unmatched experience and the drive to help patients reach their goals, Dr. Jeannie MacDonald understands beauty from the inside out. Dr. MacDonald’s unique artistic skills allow her to develop distinct treatment plans to reveal your most radiant, natural-looking self, making her one of the most sought-after eyelid lift providers in Vancouver.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that involves removing the excess skin, tightening the muscles of your upper and lower lids, and, if necessary, removing fatty tissue. Dr. MacDonald accomplishes all these improvements through an incision along your upper eyelid’s natural fold or just below the eyelashes for the lower lids. The procedure leaves a faint scar that remains discreetly hidden.

Eyelid lift surgery can help improve the appearance of issues such as:

  • Loose or sagging skin that interrupts natural upper eyelid contour, impairing vision
  • Fatty deposits that cause puffy-looking eyelids
  • Bags beneath the eyes
  • Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles on the lower eyelid

Many of Dr. MacDonald’s patients choose to pair their eyelid lift with a brow lift to rejuvenate the upper facial region.

What Are the Benefits of Blepharoplasty?

Eyelid surgery can help you give you an enhanced, rejuvenated appearance. By addressing bags or sagging skin around the eyes, blepharoplasty can help you look more alert and awake.

Whether you are looking to improve your appearance or correct functional issues, blepharoplasty offers the solution to restoring the eye region, leaving your eyes looking more refreshed and rested.

Following your eyelid surgery, you will notice:

  • Decreased bagginess under the eyes
  • Reduced puffiness around the eyes
  • Smoothed wrinkles around the eye area
  • Brighter, more appealing eyes
  • Refreshed appearance

Am I A Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery/Blepharoplasty?

You may benefit from an blepharoplasty surgery if your upper eyelids are drooping and wrinkled (upper eyelid blepharoplasty), or if you have puffy lower eyelid bags that make you look tired and older than your age (lower eyelid surgery).

Typically, Dr. MacDonald recommends that candidates for eyelid lift should:

  • Be physically healthy
  • Be non-smokers
  • Have no severe eye conditions
  • Have no medical conditions that impair healing
  • Have realistic expectations and a positive outlook
  • Be prepared to closely follow pre- and post-procedure instructions

What Can I Expect During an Eyelid Lift Procedure?

Dr. MacDonald and her team carefully customize all eyelid lift procedures for each patient’s most favorable result. Here are some general steps you can expect.

Pre-Procedure

Typically, patients only need a local anesthetic for an eyelid lift. However, as the surgery may affect your vision, you need to arrange for someone to drive you home following your surgery and stay with you the first night.

Check-In and Anesthesia

Our caring team will greet you at the check-in area. Dr. MacDonald will ensure you are comfortable, answer any last-minute questions, and perform her surgical markings. After administering a local anesthetic, Dr. MacDonald will begin your eyelid surgery.

Eyelid Lift Procedure

Dr. MacDonald will create tiny incisions that are well-concealed within the natural eyelid structure, through which she will remove or reposition fat, tighten muscles, and trim excess skin.

An eyelid lift takes approximately one to two hours, and you will then spend around 30 minutes in the recovery room.

Eyelid Lift Aftercare

Following your eyelift surgery, you will receive an ointment to apply daily with a cotton swab. You should also keep your eyes well-lubricated by blinking frequently.

For a week to 10 days following surgery, your eyes and face will be swollen, bruised, and discolored, and they may feel stiff. In the first few weeks, you may also develop light sensitivity, blurred vision, and frequent tearing. These symptoms usually subside over time.

Dr. MacDonald will meet with you five to seven days following surgery to ensure you are healing well and to remove the stitches.

Following your eyelid lift, you should:

  • Avoid washing your face around the eyes for a week
  • Avoid any activity that may cause squinting
  • Wear sunglasses even indoors if sunny
  • Lay back in a reclined position as much as possible the first week to minimize swelling
  • Only wear glasses and no contact lenses until your incisions have completely healed
  • Bend at the waist for five days

For patients who have physical, strenuous jobs, we recommend planning a minimum of four weeks’ recovery time before returning to work. For those with more sedentary jobs, it may be possible to return as early as two weeks following surgery.

For four to six weeks following surgery, you must avoid activities that may increase your blood pressure. However, we encourage you to start taking slow, gentle walks as soon after surgery as possible.

As with any procedure, following Dr. MacDonald’s instructions about limiting physical activity, cleansing, and avoiding sun exposure is fundamental to ensuring optimal results from a blepharoplasty in Vancouver.

Vancouver Eyelid Lift FAQs

Your eyelid lift cost in Vancouver will depend on your unique needs and desired results. Following your consultation, Dr. MacDonald’s assistant will provide a detailed breakdown of your eyelid lift cost in Vancouver.

We will give you anesthetics during your surgery, so you should not feel discomfort. Dr. MacDonald may prescribe pain medication to take while you heal. Be sure to address your pain concerns with her during your consultation.

After blepharoplasty, patients experience pain, swelling, and bruising that may obscure your results for 10 to 14 days. Your appearance will gradually improve as these side effects subside, revealing a smoother, more refreshed and alert eyelid area. Complete healing may take a few months.

Until your eyelid lift has completely healed, be vigilant about sun protection and always wear dark sunglasses when sunlight is unavoidable. Generally, with proper skin care and sun protection, your Vancouver eyelid lift results should last many years.
