Liposuction

Liposuction in New Westminster, BC | MacDonald Plastic Surgery

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures and one that has the highest rate of patient satisfaction. It involves making a small incision and suctioning fat from under the skin with a hollow stainless steel tube called a cannula.

Liposuction is a day surgery, meaning you go home the same day. It requires a general anesthetic so we have you complete a pre-operative questionnaire to ensure you are ready for surgery. You will be given instructions on what time to arrive and reminded not to eat or drink anything the night before surgery. The surgery is approximately 2 hours and you will spend approximately 3 hours in the recovery room, so plan to spend the day at the hospital. You will be given a prescription for pain medication before leaving the hospital.

Candidates for Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction surgery can get rid of unsightly rolls, bumps, and bulges and give you a sleeker, more toned-looking silhouette. Since the healing process is gradual, it will take several months before you see the full results of your surgery. The small incisions used to insert the cannula will fade over a number of months, usually becoming barely visible.

Liposuction can be used to treat stubborn, localized fat deposits in the upper arms, abdomen, thighs, ankles, hips (love handles) back, neck and breasts that diet or exercise won’t budge. Liposuction can remove these fat deposits and restore a smoother, more toned appearance. Liposuction might be for you if:

  • You have disproportionate fat deposits that you cannot get rid of with diet or exercise
  • Have good skin elasticity as liposuction just removes fat it does not tighten skin

The results of liposuction surgery are usually long-lasting, but they may be affected by weight gain, aging, pregnancy and lifestyle factors

What Can I Expect During Liposuction Recovery?

You will need someone to drive you home from the hospital and stay with you for the first 24 hours. Dr. MacDonald will see you 5-7 days after surgery to ensure you are healing well. You can shower 48 hours after surgery. All the stitches are dissolving and incision care is simply ointment and gauze. You will have a wrap or binder on from the day of surgery and this is worn full-time until the healing is complete: 2-4 weeks.

If you have a very physical job, you should plan to have 2 weeks of healing time. If you have a fairly sedentary job then some have returned to work as early as 1 week. You need to avoid activities that may increase your blood pressure, i.e. running or lifting weights, until 4-6 weeks after surgery.
