What Is Scar Revision?

While scars are part of the body’s natural healing process, they may be conspicuous due to their location, shape, size, texture, or color and appear different from the rest of your skin. Scar appearance can differ depending on the wound location, depth, healing time, age, as well as an individual’s genetic predisposition to scarring.

While the appearance of scars may gradually improve over 1-2 years, it is unlikely to observe any improvement after that. However, scar revision can help minimize the appearance of unsightly scars.

Types of scars can include:

  • Discoloration or surface irregularities that do not impair function or cause discomfort
  • Hypertrophic scar, thick clusters of raised red scar tissue
  • Keloids, painful or itchy raised lesions of scar tissue
  • Contractures, scars that restrict movement
  • Wide scars with colour changes that do not match the natural skin tone.

Scar revision procedures can be either surgical or non-surgical. As each scar is unique, the location, size, and type of scar will help Dr. MacDonald determine the appropriate treatment for your scar revision.

Treatment options include:

  • Topical treatments
  • Minimally invasive procedures
  • Surgical revision with advanced closure techniques

Dr. MacDonald recommends the Scar Kit to all her surgical patients. The Scar Kit gives patients access to silicone gel-based products, the gold standard in scar care, to prevent and minimize scarring.

What Are the Benefits of Scar Revision in Vancouver?

No matter their location, scars can be bothersome or cause emotional distress. Scar revision can greatly improve the appearance of scars and also improve confidence and restore emotional health.

Scar revision aims to minimize the appearance of scars by replacing damaged skin with healthier, younger-looking tissue and encouraging skin’s own collagen production. With a goal of improving overall skin tone and texture, scar revision can also help restore skin functionality.

By utilizing the silicone gel-based products in the Scar Kit, you can ensure you are doing all you can to decrease scar formation. The Scar Kit can help improve the appearance of older scars as well as fresh scars.

You should only consider scar revision if the scar upsets you. As a highly individualized procedure, scar revision is not intended to change your appearance to please someone else. Scar revision procedures aim to make scars more aesthetically pleasing; however, no scar can be completely erased.

Am I a Good Candidate for Scar Revision in Vancouver?

Depending on the type, size, and location of your scar, Dr. MacDonald will determine the technique to best improve the scar’s appearance. Generally, most scar revision procedures are safe and effective for all skin types. Healthy men and women who are looking to improve the appearance of damaged skin are typically good candidates for scar revision in Vancouver.

Dr. MacDonald suggests candidates for scar revision:

  • Be in good mental and physical health
  • Be non-smokers or willing to quit
  • Have no active skin ailments, such as acne or other skin diseases, in the treatment location
  • Have realistic goals and a positive outlook

Prior to Your Procedure

As scar revision is an outpatient procedure, you will return home on the same day. You can eat or drink before the procedure. You should be able to drive yourself home following the procedure unless the treatment impairs your vision or the use of your hands.

Check-in and Anesthesia

You will be greeted by our team for check-in. Dr. MacDonald will ensure you are comfortable, answer any last questions, and perform surgical markings.

anesthesia while you are awake. The procedure lasts approximately an hour, depending on the size and location of the scar.

Scar Revision Aftercare

Following your scar revision procedure, you will have a light dressing with ointment applied to the treated area. The sutures are non-dissolving and must be removed by Dr. MacDonald in 5-10 days.

You may shower 48 hours after the surgery. Wound care includes simply washing the incision and applying ointment and a light dressing every 1-2 days.

Unless your incision is in an area that can become come easily soiled while working or irritated by your job, you will not need to take any time off work. However, you should avoid activities that increase your blood pressure for a minimum of 48 hours after surgery. Ideally, avoiding these activities for 1-2 weeks would allow for optimal scar revision results.

At 2 weeks after surgery, you will begin using the silicone gel and sheets in your Scar Kit, massaging and paper taping the scar to help keep it controlled. If you are prone to hypertrophic or keloid scarring, Dr. MacDonald may consider injecting a small amount of steroid at this time.

How Soon Will I See My Scar Revision Results?

The scar revision healing process will depend upon the scar, location, and your body’s healing abilities. While healing may take up to 1-2 weeks, you may experience swelling that obscures your results, which should resolve over the next few weeks or months. In some cases, new scars may take a year to fully heal and fade.

By using the silicone gel products available in Scar Kit as directed by Dr. MacDonald, you can help minimize the appearance of your scars. As with any treatment, it is important to thoroughly follow all post-procedural instructions regarding activities, cleansing, and sun exposure to ensure optimal results from your scar revision in Vancouver.
