Breast Asymmetry

Breast Balancing Surgery in New Westminster, BC

It is not uncommon for women to have one breast that is larger than the other. For some women, that difference in size can be significant – up to a full cup size or more. This is called breast asymmetry. Breast asymmetry corrective surgery can even the size of the breasts and restore balance.

If you have breasts that are noticeably different in size or shape, then you can benefit from breast asymmetry corrective surgery. If you suffer from a condition called tuberous breasts, breast implants can help give you a more natural rounded appearance. In addition, if you have one nipple positioned differently than the other, corrective surgery can help make your nipples more symmetrical.

How is Breast Asymmetry Surgery Performed?

  • Single breast augmentation with implants: This involves breast augmentation surgery where a saline or silicone gel implant is inserted in your smaller breast to make it the same size as the larger breast.
  • Double breast augmentation with implants: Some women choose to increase their overall breast size.
  • Different-sized implants: This can be used to increase the size of both breasts so that they are symmetrical.
  • Breast reduction: Breast reduction involves reducing the larger breast to make it even with the smaller breast.

Women may opt for either a saline (water) filled implant or a silicone gel implant based on a number of factors including:

  • The location of the implant (above or under the pectoralis muscle).
  • Type of incision (under the breast or around the areola).
  • Amount of breast tissue already present.
  • Cost: If you are a candidate, a saline implant is covered under the MSP plan (as is the cost of reducing the larger breast).

What Can I Expect During Breast Asymmetry Surgery and Recovery?

Breast asymmetry corrective surgery is a day surgery, meaning you go home the same day. It requires a general anesthetic so we have you complete a pre-operative questionnaire to ensure you are ready for surgery. You will be given instructions on what time to arrive and reminded not to eat or drink anything the night before surgery. The surgery is approximately 2 hours and you will spend approximately 3 hours in the recovery room, so plan to spend the day at the hospital. You will be given a prescription for pain medication before leaving the hospital.

You will need someone to drive you home from the hospital and stay with you for the first 24 hours. You can shower 48 hours after surgery. All the stitches are dissolving and incision care is simply ointment and gauze. You will have a wrap or binder on from the day of surgery and this is worn full-time until the healing is complete in around 2-4 weeks. Dr. MacDonald will see you 5-7 days after surgery to show you how to care for the implants and incision care.

If you have a very physical job, you should plan to have 4 weeks of healing time. If you have a fairly sedentary job, then you may return to work as early as 2 weeks after the procedure. You need to avoid activities that may increase your blood pressure, such as running or lifting weights, until 4-6 weeks after surgery. You are encouraged to be out walking as soon after surgery as possible.
