Neck Lift

Neck Lift Surgery in New Westminster, BC | MacDonald Plastic Surgery

Many women find that the skin on their neck starts to sag as a result of aging or weight loss. Excess fatty tissue and loose muscles can create a double chin, neck folds, and a loss of definition along the jawline.

A neck lift is a surgical procedure that can smooth and tighten the skin on the neck and jaw, provide a more defined and youthful appearance, and take years off your appearance. A neck lift may be performed alongside a facelift, or it may be performed alone.

Sometimes, liposuction alone can correct the fullness, but it will not address the excess skin or muscles. In order to address both fullness and excess skin, we combine surgery and liposuction to remove both the fatty tissue and excess skin, and correct and tighten the muscle bands. Candidates for Neck Lift Surgery

Often, extra fatty tissue is localized in a specific area of the body and may not change even when you lose weight. The neck is a common area for these stubborn fat deposits to accumulate. This procedure helps restore firmness to the neck and enhances the jaw definition.

You may be a good candidate for a neck lift if you have:

  • Extra fat on your neck and under your chin
  • Loose neck muscles
  • Wrinkled or sagging skin

What Can I Expect During Neck Lift Surgery?

You will be given instructions on what time to arrive and be reminded not to eat or drink anything the night before surgery. As a neck lift requires a general anaesthetic, we will have you complete a pre-operative questionnaire to ensure you are ready.

A neck lift takes approximately 3-4 hours and you will then spend around 3 hours in the recovery room, so set the whole day aside for it. You will be given a prescription for pain medication before leaving the hospital.

What Can I Expect During Neck Lift Recovery?

You will need someone to drive you home from the hospital and stay with you for the first 24 hours. You will receive an ointment that must be applied daily with a Q-tip. You cannot shower for 48 hours after surgery. You must wear a wrap for 2-4 weeks after surgery, until everything is completely healed.

Dr. MacDonald will meet with you 5-7 days after the surgery to ensure that you are healing well. All the stitches will dissolve on their own, so they do not need to be removed.

If you have a very physical job, we recommend that you plan a minimum of 4 weeks healing time before returning to work. If you have a more sedentary job, it could be possible for you to return as early as after 2 weeks.

You need to avoid activities that may increase your blood pressure, such as running or lifting weights, until 4-6 weeks after surgery. Likewise, you should avoid bending at the waist for at least five days. However, you are encouraged to go out walking as soon after surgery as is possible.

Your neck may show excess swelling and bruising for 3 days after surgery, but that will soon subside.
