Liposuction

Liposuction for Men in New Westminster, BC | MacDonald Plastic Surgery

Liposuction has one of the highest rates of patient satisfaction of any cosmetic procedure. The procedure can remove stubborn fat deposits and get rid of unsightly rolls and bulges, giving you a more chiseled and sculpted look. Men may even be better candidates for liposuction than women, as they have more localized fat deposits and thicker, denser skin that snaps back better after the procedure.

Liposuction might be for you if:

  • You are close to your normal weight but have disproportionate fat deposits that you cannot get rid of with diet or exercise
  • Have good skin elasticity, as liposuction removes fat without tightening the skin

The results of liposuction surgery are usually long-lasting, but they may be affected by weight gain, aging, and lifestyle factors.

Where can Liposuction be Performed?

Liposuction involves making a small incision and suctioning fat from under the skin with a hollow stainless steel tube called a cannula. The small incisions used to insert the cannula will fade over a number of months, usually becoming barely visible. Since the healing process is gradual, it will take several months before you see the full results of your surgery.

Liposuction can be used to eliminate stubborn, localized fat in the:

Male Liposuction Surgery and Rocvery

Liposuction is a day surgery, meaning you go home the same day. It requires a general anaesthetic so we have you complete a pre-operative questionnaire to ensure you are ready for surgery. You will be given instructions on what time to arrive and reminded not to eat or drink anything the night before surgery. The surgery is approximately 2 hours and you will spend approximately 3 hours in the recovery room, so plan to spend the day at the hospital. You will be given a prescription for pain medication before leaving the hospital.

You will need someone to drive you home from the hospital and stay with you for the first 24 hours. Dr. MacDonald will see you 5-7 days after surgery to ensure you are healing well. You can shower 48 hours after surgery. All the sutures are dissolvable and wound care involves simply ointment and gauze. You will have a wrap or binder on from the day of surgery. This is worn full-time until the healing is complete after 2-4 weeks.

If you have a very physical job, we recommend that you plan to have 2 weeks of healing time. If you have a fairly sedentary job, you may be able to return to work as early as 1 week. You need to avoid activities that may increase your blood pressure, i.e. running or lifting weights, until 4-6 weeks after surgery. You are encouraged to be out walking as soon after surgery as possible.
