Tummy Tuck

Male Tummy Tuck in New Westminster, BC | MacDonald Plastic Surgery

Male abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for men. It trims and improves the appearance of your abdominal region by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the underlying (rectus) muscles to leave you with a more sculpted abdomen.

You are a good candidate for male abdominoplasty if you are at or close to a good body weight but have excess weight around your midsection that diet and exercise doesn’t diminish. You can also benefit from male abdominoplasty if you have excess or loose skin as a result of extreme weight loss.

Who Qualifies for This Procedure?

Men who are ideal candidates for a tummy tuck share the following qualities:

  • Lead a healthy lifestyle
  • Do not drink or smoke to excess
  • Have no medical conditions that will slow the healing process or increase the risk
  • Have significant loose abdominal tissue or skin
  • Have realistic expectations for surgery. Dr. MacDonald will work with patients to determine what will best meet their needs.
  • Have a healthy, stable weight

Your Consultation

Your first step will be to have a detailed consultation with Dr. MacDonald, where she will listen to your goals and concerns and complete a careful examination. Then, she will discuss the treatment options that best address your concerns and particular situation.

Dr. MacDonald and her staff will:

  • Give you detailed information about the surgery and what you can expect before, during, and after the procedure
  • Discuss any concerns or questions you may have
  • Discuss potential risks of the procedure

What Can I Expect During Tummy Tuck Surgery?

An abdominoplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning you go home the same day. It requires a general anesthetic, so you need to complete a pre-operative questionnaire to ensure you are sufficiently healthy for surgery. Dr. MacDonald will provide you with instructions on what time to arrive and remind you not to eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. The surgery is approximately three hours so plan to spend the day at the hospital. You will receive a prescription for pain medication and antibiotics before leaving the hospital.

The procedure requires lifting abdominal skin after making an incision along the pubic bone to the navel. Then, Dr. MacDonald strengthens the abdominal wall by tightening the muscles with sutures. Next, she removes excess skin and stitches the remaining skin together. You will go home with dressings, bandages, and a compression garment to minimize swelling. You may also have drains to remove fluid from the surgical site.

A mini tummy tuck is less extensive than a traditional tummy tuck. First, Dr. MacDonald makes a horizontal incision between the pubic bone and navel. Next, she lifts the target skin and tightens or repairs weak abdominal muscles. Then, she removes excess skin and tightens the remaining skin before closing the incisions with sutures.

Dr. MacDonald may employ liposuction with tummy tuck surgery to eliminate love handles.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

Male abdominoplasty is an outpatient procedure. We ask that a responsible adult accompany you to the hospital to ensure you get home safely. Also, plan to have someone stay with you for the first few days after surgery. You may have to take a prescription anticoagulant and antibiotic after surgery. The healing process varies among patients and depends on the extent of your procedure.

You can shower when Dr. MacDonald clears you, typically about 48 hours after she removes your drains. Plan to sleep on an incline for the first few days after the operation, and don’t expect to drive for a few weeks after surgery. Do not exercise until the doctor clears you to do so, usually about six to eight weeks after surgery. We will schedule follow-up appointments to ensure you’re healing well.

Male Abdominoplasty FAQs

While tummy tucks leave a scar, Dr. MacDonald carefully makes her surgical incisions in places that will heal nearly unnoticeably. By avoiding excess sun exposure and following a healthy skin care regimen, you can further minimize the chances of scarring. Laser treatments such as IPL can also reduce scars.

Dr. MacDonald takes a customized approach to each patient’s surgical plan to ensure ideal results that are unique to you. She will give you an accurate cost estimate at your consultation. If necessary, we offer financing plans to help you pay for your surgery in installments.
